Black whistle with BR moulded on one side as made by ACME for British Railways for many years.
The traditional ritual of whistles blown by station staff and then by the guard as he waves his green flag for the departure of a train at principal stations has been part of railway operation since the last century.
Whistle signals alerted drivers to look out for hand signals to move and were often given by shunting staff and signalmen.
This whistle is one of a series used by guards, station master and railway police all authentically reproduced by Acme using tooling we sometimes put down over 125 years ago.
Whilst two way radios may now be used in many places, these whistles keep alive a small part of our railway heritage.
